We transported ourselves back to the United States for the weekend by visiting the town of Antigua, Guatemala, where English is widely spoken and there’s no shortage of white people in shorts and sandals. The town itself feels a bit like Disneyland, with cobblestone streets, brightly colored buildings, ice cream carts, and an occasional restaurant employee in an uncomfortable costume. We stayed with some friends of Mia’s sister, Danny and Katie, who managed to show us some quality hang outs slightly off the tourist track as well as the tourist headquarters. We were able to catch some U.S. football at the popular sports bar where Katie works. And we rocked 6th place in quiz night at the Irish pub.
Mostly, our time in Antigua was a laid back, low stress weekend where we could catch up on emails and laundry and prepare ourselves mentally for what we were expecting to be the most difficult part of our journey so far – a mad dash through Honduras (currently without a president) with no bus or hotel reservations and only a vague idea of the bus schedule and route. It was either that or El Salvador, which had just experienced severe mudslides due to hurricane Ira.
