After spending three months in the jungle of Costa Rica, we are dirty. Everything we own has acquired patches of black mold or at least an unforgiving stink. Our clothing, after six months of being hand-washed and air-dried, has become faded, holey, and worn thin. Shoes worn for basketball, soccer, Frisbee, and hiking have become fermentation experiments. Chris’ legs have been ravaged by insects of all types and his own relentless scratching. Mia has a sweat rash on the inside of her arms and a perpetual ring of sweat in the armpit zone. We figured it was time to get out of the jungle for a while.
We are scheduled to begin some wind energy work in Brazil on April 12, and will be working out of Rio de Janeiro for at least six weeks. It will be a radical shift for us; leaving a rural community where we knew nearly everyone for one of the biggest cities in the world. At the same time we’re very excited for the move- new country, new language, new continent. Of course, Rio de Janeiro is also known as a beautiful and exciting city.
We’ve had a great time in the community of Mastatal and have built some life-long friendships there. It’s a place we will return to. We’re reluctant to move on, but we’re excited for the next leg of our trip. Olá Rio!
Our new neighborhood
