It is difficult to buy a surprise birthday present for someone who is by your side nearly 24 hours a day. The few hours that we are not immediately adjacent to each other are during Spanish class since we are in different levels. Chris took advantage of this time to sneak out of school with his teacher to find the perfect birthday gift for Mia – a huge piñata of a Mexican wrestler, or “Luchador,” that was nearly as tall as Mia. Chris and his teacher returned to the school in time for our mid-day break with the piñata full of candy. All the teachers quickly cleared a space in the courtyard and found a blindfold and heavy stick. The director of the school climbed up on the roof to hang piñata (and worked up a sweat swinging the piñata out of Mia’s reach). The housekeeper lady purchased some ding-dongs out of the vending machine, stacked them on top of each other, stuck a candle in it, and led the group in singing a Mexican birthday song. Then Mia destroyed the piñata. It was a nice spontaneous party. Unfortunately, we did not bring our camera to school on this day, so the only evidence we have of the party is Chris’ interpretive artwork.
The day ended with a mole feast prepared by our host mom, and a futbol match at an Irish pub where we were able to splurge on quality Belgium beers.
